Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to give my dog a bone?

Most RAW bones are edible for dogs. Raw chicken, turkey, lamb, or beef bones are soft enough for your furry friend to chew, eat, and digest. However, there is a risk of choking and tooth damage with bones, so it’s always best to speak to a qualified vet if you’re unsure.

Is it necessary to bring my dog and/or cat in for a yearly comprehensive exam?

Comprehensive examinations are recommended AT LEAST annually to check for health issues that may not be apparent to owners. The vet will examine your pet’s eyes, ears, skin and coat, listen to their heart, and discuss any concerns you may have.

When do I switch from puppy/kitten food to adult food?

Switching a puppy or kitten to adult food too early can cause obesity and gastro-intestinal issues. We recommend switching to adult food between 10-12 months.

How often do I need to bathe my dog?

If no skin condition is present, you can bathe your dog every 4-6 weeks.

Is it necessary to deworm my bird?

Deworming your bird is certainly necessary, just like it is for any other pet.

Can I get fleas from my cat?

Fleas from your pet may bite you, but they will jump off again once they have bitten you as your blood isn’t what they like and you’re probably not hairy enough! Be sure to de-flea your cat regularly to ensure a flea-free home environment.

How can I ensure my guinea pig gets enough Vitamin C?

Guinea pigs do not produce Vitamin C by themselves. The right guinea pig pellets and a vast array of fresh vegetables can help ensure they get enough Vitamin C to live a long & healthy life, but we recommend a supplement in tablet form. Let us recommend the best option for your fluffy friend!

Are woodshavings unsafe for rats?

Rats have a sensitive respiratory tract, so in fact, woodshavings, rather than sawdust, should be used. Our woodshavings are dust-extracted to minimise complications in the respiratory tract of your rat.

Can I wash my cat?

Most cats aren’t very fond of water. However, when starting earlier on and taking time to let your cat get used to it, a bathing routine can be established for cats.

How can I make my parrot more tame?

Small steps to get your parrot used to you, such as sitting near his cage or enclosure, offering favorite treats from your hand, and gently handling your parrot can help. Once your bird is used to you and sees that you offer fun treats, he’ll be more likely to interact in the future.

Which fish thrive in small bowls?

A good rule of thumb is that 2.5 cm of fish requires approximately 4 litres of water to flourish. So when choosing your pet, think small: little tetras and goldfish are good choices.

Should I spay or neuter my pet?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. What we do know, however, is that spaying or neutering definitely helps to control the pet population and also comes with quite a few health and behavioural benefits.

Is it possible to walk a cat on a leash?

Although it may seem strange, it is possible to walk a cat on a leash and it is more common than you’d expect. That said, training is not easy and requires a lot of patience and many tasty treats!

Is it unhealthy to share a bed with my dog?

This is a much debated topic and there is no clean-cut answer. Research does, however, suggest that it is safe as long as the dog is clean and healthy, and as long as bedding is washed regularly. Some studies even reveal that it may improve one’s sleep!

Why does my hedgehog smell bad?

Most hedgehogs do not naturally emit a bad odour. They only appear to smell foul when urine and faecal matter builds up in their belly fur, spines and feet. This occurs especially when their cages are not cleaned thoroughly every week, and when they are not given a bath twice a month.
